This Week In Baseball (April 17-23)

MLB Notes

Fernando Rodney adds his name to a group of Baseball Greats

On Saturday evening, Fernando Rodney trotted out of the Oakland Bullpen, a usual occurrence for one of the best closers in the league. However, this outing was different from all the previous ones. It was in this outing that he played in his 906th career game, tying the great Cy Young in games played. When you compare these two great players, there are a lot of differences between the two. During Young’s days, in the early 1900s, pitchers played nearly every day, leading to a whopping 815 career starts by Young while Rodney has only thrown 895.1 total innings over a 17 year MLB career. Both of these pitchers have one thing in common, though, each were vital to their teams success, Young as a starter and Rodney as a closer. So far in 2019, Rodney has has thrown 10 innings with a 7.20 ERA and appeared in 11 games.

Braves Come From Behind Against Indians’ Poor Pitching

Following a bad first game of a doubleheader against the Indians, which they lost 8-4, the Braves found themselves in a hole following a subpar start by Touki Toussaint. Although they managed to get back on track thanks to their excellent relievers, the offense had been stagnant all day. Down 7-3 in the top of the ninth, the Braves were down to their last three outs. However, they never quit and started a rally with consecutive one-out walks from Dansby Swanson and Tyler Flowers, which loaded the bases. Ender Incarnite then struck out, leaving the Braves to their final opportunity to score. Rookie Ozzie Albies was ramped and ready as he came to the plate and ripped a single into right, scoring two and bringing the deficit down to just two runs. Josh Donaldson then followed suit with a walk, loading the bases once more. From that point on, everything was spiraling downward for Cleveland as pitcher Tyler Olsen walked Freddie Freeman, bringing home another run and putting the Braves in a real position to get the win. Finally, with two outs and the bases loaded, Ronald Acuna came to the plate and promptly slapped a double into the gap in left field, scoring Albies and Donaldson, and giving the Braves and 8-7 victory.

Garder Hits His 100th Career Homer

In a critical AL East series between longtime rivals, the Yankees beat the Red Sox last Wednesday evening thanks to some power hitting by veteran Brett Gardner. In the seventh, Gardner took J.A Happ deep, knocking a grand slam for his 100th career home run. The left fielder has never been one to hit for power, but has always been a steady force at the plate, posting a .260 career batting average and a .344 on base percentage. Fellow Outfielder Clint Frazier added to Gardner’s successful day at the plate, going 3 for 4. In an unusual 2 game series, the Yankees won both by scores of 8-0 and 5-3.
