Recapping Week 2 and Looking ahead to Week 3

Tight one in Austin

College Gameday made the trip to Austin for a highly anticipated top 10 matchup between #9 Texas and #6 LSU. Fans from both schools were out in full force and were behind their teams throughout the game on Saturday night. It was very much a battle of momentum as one play could change the outlook of either team. After the Longhorns failed to convert on two consecutive 4th and goal opportunities in the first half, they came out of halftime locked, loaded, and ready to defeat the 20-6 deficit that lie before them. For the most part they did, climbing back into the game with 14 points in the 3rd quarter. However, LSU was also on top of their game, putting up 22 4th quarter points, the last of those coming inside of 5 minutes as the Tigers took a 13 point lead with 2 minutes remaining. Texas QB Sam Ehlingher and the offense weren’t done yet, though, as Ehlinger fired a touchdown pass with 36 seconds to cut into the 45-31 deficit, making it now 45-38. In a dramatic onside kick, Horns Kicker Cameron Dicker punched the onside kick through a wall of Tiger defenders, as Texas WR Collin Johnson leapt for the ball. He nearly recovered it too, but much to the dismay of Texas fans, didn’t maintain full possession as he hit the turf and the ball bounced out of bounds. It was a frustrating ending for a frustrated team. But the Horns went head to head in a back and forth fight against one of the top squads in the country, vital experience for Big 12 play and especially when they face currently #5 Oklahoma on October 12. With the key victory, LSU jumped up to #4 in the AP Poll while Texas dropped to #12.

BYU hands Tennessee second loss of the season in overtime

Tennessee was coming off of a devastating opening season loss to Georgia State when BYU rolled into town. While experts predicted it to be close, none imagined it going into double overtime like it did Saturday evening. Neither team scored much during the game; the highest total number of points was 10 in the first quarter. However, trailing 16-13 in the 4th, BYU made several completions in a game -ending drive that set up a field goal to tie it up and send it into overtime. The two teams traded points back and forth, with BYU tossing a touchdown and then the Volunteers of Tennessee following suit with a 13 yard touchdown pass to knot the score at 23. As the second overtime began, the Vols had to settle for a field goal which was followed by a touchdown run for the Cougars, giving BYU the 29-26 win. This is Tennessee’s first 0-2 start since 1988.

Michigan nearly takes a loss to Army

Mchigan was given a challenge against underdog Army at home last Saturday as the Black Knights used their unique triple option offense to get around the Wolverine Defense and put up points, while Michgan’s offense wasn’t prepared for the stingy secondary of Army, only completing 20 passes and also scoring 14 points. This game also went into overtime as both teams scored touchdowns. Michigan then started the second overtime period with a touchdown. Army QB Kelvin Hopkins Jr. followed that by fumbling on a pass attempt to give the Wolverines the win.

Games of the week

USC v.s BYU, 3:30 pm EST, ABC- Both are coming off exciting victories (BYU over Tennessee and USC over Stanford) with a whole lot of confidence. Pay attention to Trojans QB Kedon Slovis. A true freshman, he has led USC to two straight vitcoties after J.T Daniels tore his ACL in Week 1.

Iowa v.s Iowa State, 4pm EST, FS1- Always one of the biggest rivalries in the midwest, this battle has been low scoring and full of defense in recent years. Look for that once again in 2019. Iowa’s defense has only allowed 14 points all season while Iowa State’s defense is what kept them in their opening season victory against Drake.

Florida v.s Kentucky, 7pm EST, ESPN- Both 2-0 teams, this is a primetime matchup that has a spread of just 8 points and is at Kentucky. Both programs have been on the rise in recent seasons, so look for a tight one in Lexington, especially in the first week of SEC play.
