NFL: Garrett out-McCarthy in

By Bob Zayas, 360 Sports Contributor

1/8/20

The end of an era has come for the Dallas Cowboys.

After 9 full seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, Head Coach Jason Garrett has been replaced. Garrett, with a career winning percentage of .554, is being replaced by former Green Packer Head Coach Mike McCarthy.

McCarthy, who coached at Green Bay from 2006 to 2018, is now the 9th head coach in Dallas Cowboy history. The 56 year old who hails from Pennsylvania was first hired by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1993 as an assistant coach. His career winning percentage is .613 and he coached the Packers to a Superbowl (XLV) win in a 31 to 25 contest versus Pittsburgh in 2011.

Interestingly enough, these two coaches battled it out on seven different occasions from 2015-2017. McCarthy's Packers were 6-1 against Garrett's Cowboys, including a narrow 26-21 victory in the NFC Divisional playoff game in 2015.

The question most Dallas fans have now is will Cowboy’s owner Jerry Jones allow McCarthy full rein of the team? This has been the constant criticism over the years with Dallas. The Cowboys have the talent but they fell short again this season with their fourth 8-8 season in their previous 9 seasons. So, a fresh start is needed. Is the answer Mike McCarthy? If nothing else Dallas fans have some hope to look forward to in 2020.

McCarthy isn't the only new NFL head coach. Here's an updated list of the NFL coaching carousel. Note that two of these three, as well as the Cowboys are in the NFC East.
