Navy Beats Army 31-7!

By Bob Zayas

December 16, 2019

On a rainy and windy Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia, over 68,000 fans watched Navy out run Army for a 31 to 7 victory in the military academies' 120th meeting. Army previously had a three-game win streak, however, Navy went into the game as a 10-point favorite. While the Black Knights scored first late in the first quarter, they couldn’t stop the Midshipmen and their explosive offense - specifically, Navy QB Malcom Perry.

The Army-Navy matchup dates back to 1890 when Navy won the first meeting 24 to 0. Since then, Navy leads the series 60-52-7 (now 61-52-7). The longest win streak in this historic matchup was between 2002 and 2015 when Navy won 14 games in a row.

Army tried desperately to score another touchdown in the first half but were forced to punt on their following two possessions before the half. Navy took a 14-7 lead heading into halftime and maintained that momentum throughout the rest of the game. The 2nd Half was all Navy! Their offense ran the Triple Option primarily, other than a 1-yard trick pass on the goal line that went for a touchdown. Perry, the game’s MVP, ran for 304 yards and had two touchdowns. His longest run was a 55-yard touchdown run to the right side of the offensive line. By comparison, Army had 123 rushing yards and two pass plays.

Army’s season ended with this disappointing defeat. (23) Navy, however, meets up with Kansas State on New Year’s Eve in the Liberty Bowl.
