MLB Trade Deadline Today

7/31/19

By Bob Zayas

The MLB will have only one trade deadline in 2019.  That deadline was today July 31st at 4pm EST.  There were mixed opinions on having the deadline earlier than usual. Some said it would be less confusing than the previous year’s trade deadlines. Others didn’t know how it would all work out by having teams decide much earlier than usual if they were rebuilding or contending. As an example, the recent win streak by the San Francisco Giants who found themselves suddenly in the Wild Card race needed to decide if they would still trade Madison Bumgarner or keep him for the postseason.  While still other fans saw this early deadline as another exciting twist into an already exciting season.

Here are some notable players and where they are now playing:

Trevor Bauer, as part of a three-team trade deal, will now be pitching for the Cincinnati Reds.

Yasiel Puig, a Reds fan favorite, ended his tenue with the Reds by getting ejected for participating in a major brawl last night versus the Pittsburgh Pirates. Puig is headed to the Cleveland Indians. Indians fans should be thrilled with this move. Following him to Cleveland is a powerful swing and a rocket for an arm. His outfield play has been headlined with multiple game saving throws from right field straight to home plate.

Zack Greinke, 10-4 on the year, goes from Arizona to the Houston Astros. He has a 2.87 ERA on the year.

Houston was reportedly looking at the Mets' Noah Syndergaard, or Detroit righty Matthew Boyd, the AL leader in K/BB ratio, before landing Greinke. However, the World Series favorites were reluctant to trade top prospect Kyle Tucker away. Instead, they traded another well-known outfielder Seth Beer to Arizona, along with a couple more prospects in order to make the deal with Greinke happen.

Although many experts expected the Mets to trade away Syndergaard, their ace, the ballclub did not, and much to his excitement. He has posted a 3.17 ERA during his time in the Big Apple. With the Mets closing in on a wild card spot, "Thor" will be a valuable asset on the mound during the final weeks of the season.

Madison Bumgarner, who made his MLB debut with the Giants in 2009, was also not traded. The Giants are presently 2.5 games back in the Wild Card race and have won 19 of their last 25 games.
