It's time: Cubs earn key series victory over Milwaukee to open the season

IT’s TIME…

It’s time…It’s time to start checking box scores again, the standings, today’s pitching lineup, and where Toronto is going to play their home games (Buffalo). Baseball is definitely back! And, I must give credit to MLB and individual teams for trying to make it seem as normal as possible, even adding “virtual fans”!

The Cubs opened the season at home versus Milwaukee and looked great. Kyle Hendricks started game one, and pitched well, tossing a complete game shutout, striking out nine batters while allowing just three hits. Home runs by Anthony Rizzo and Ian Happ solidified a 3-0 win for the Cubs in this young season. The Cubs lost Game 2, but beat the Brewers handily in Game 3 (9-1) to win their first series of the year 2-1. In this first series, the Cubs offensively had 15 runs, 22 hits and 6 home runs.

Next, the Cubs move on to Cincinnati for a four-game series versus the Reds. Heading into the series, Cincinnati was 1-2. In game one, the Cubs claimed a 8-7 win.

Yesterday’s news of some Marlin players testing positive for the virus has certainly caused questions as to how the season will progress. Hopefully, you would think the MLB has a contingency plan to deal with postponed games. But, with 66 days to play 60 games there is not a lot of room for adding missed games to the schedule. One thought is that the league would follow a similar path to that of the 1981 lockout, basing the standings off of winning percentage, if a team cannot play its entire 60 game schedule.

The more games I watch, the more I have a feeling that this season, albeit shorten, is going to make for an exciting season and especially an exciting post season. Normally after the first series you hear “it’s a long way to October” but this year October is right around the corner! Every game certainly counts.

Go Cubs!!
