"Houston, We Have Liftoff!" The Weekend in Houston Sports

It was a successful weekend for pro sports in Houston as the Rockets (NBA), Texans (NFL) and Astros (MLB) all “lifted off”, powering their way to victories in each of their respective matchups .

In a close showdown at home with the Oakland Raiders, the Texans earned a narrow 27-24 victory. That was thanks to their defense, who limited Oakland to just 10 second half points, allowing QB Deshaun Watson and the offense to score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Watson was responsible for three touchdowns and threw for 279 yards while running for 46 more. It was a key win which kept the team in the race for the AFC South title with the Indianapolis Colts on their way to a 5-3 record. Next, they travel across the Atlantic to square off with Jacksonville at 8:30 am from London.

The Rockets, behind the all-star duo of James Harden and new addition Russell Westbrook, surged to a 126-123 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday evening. That duo combined for 57 points and 18 assists. In their second game of the year, the win evened them to 1-1 after a 117-111 loss to Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks in the opening game of the year. They visit Westbrook’s former team, the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night in their third game of the season.

Finally, and perhaps the biggest story in Houston sports, the Astros dominated the Nationals in the third, fourth, and fifth games of the World Series from the nation’s capital. After dropping the first two games in Houston, manager AJ Hinch was confident in his team despite going on the road. He had good reason to be. The offense began to click behind big homers from George Springer, Alex Bregman and Carlos Correa along with an energized bullpen to keep a previously hot-hitting Nationals squad at bay. They took the next three games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday by scores of 4-1, 8-1 and 7-1, which meant they scored 19 runs while only allowing 3. One of the biggest moments during the road trip came in game four when Bregman walked to the plate with the bases loaded and tensions high. Two pitches later, he took pitcher Fernando Rodney yard, smashing a grand slam over the fence to put the ‘Stros up 8-1. Game Five featured ace Gerrit Cole’s nine strikeout night while only allowing a run. As they head back to Houston for Game 6 on Tuesday, Houston leads the series 3-2, only needing a win to take back their title of World Series Champions. With the way they’ve been playing as of late, there’s no question that we will see an exciting matchup in Game 6 with Stephen Strasburg pitching for the Nats and Justin Verlander taking the mound for the Astros as Washington fights to keep their season alive.
