Here's what you need to know about Michigan, the projected Big 10 Champs

By Bob Zayas

College football has started!  College football fans have been counting the

days. Saturday mornings will soon include ESPN Game Day and all the player stats

you ever want to hear. As the Wolverines, from the Big 10 Conference, prepare for week two against Army, let’s take a look at their history and what we can expect from them this year.

Jim Harbaugh was brought on as Head Coach of Michigan in 2015.  He is also a

former Michigan QB (1983-1886). The Wolverines have gone 38-14 (.731) under his

leadership and last year went 10-3. He is still searching for his first win over rival Ohio State.

The Michigan Football program began in 1879 and has an overall winning record of 953-

342-36 (.730).  An interesting note is that in 1934, Gerald Ford (who became the

38th President of the US), started at center for them in the early 1930's. With him as one of the stars, the Wolverines went undefeated in both 1932 and 1933.  Michigan has won 11 National Titles and have had 3 Heisman Trophy winners with the last being Charles Woodson in 1997.

Their first Big 10 Conference game is at Wisconsin on 9/21/19. They play their

rival Ohio State on November 30th in Ann Arbor, MI. They are hoping home-field advantage can help them get a rivalry win in the season finale. As for season win predictions, it appears to be in the area of 9 to 10 overall wins. They face quality teams in Army, Iowa, Penn State and Ohio State, throughout the season, so it will be important for them to be on the top of their game if they hope to claim their first Big 10 title since 2004.

Make sure to keep an eye on returning QB Shea Patterson, who threw for 22 touchdowns in 2018 and ran for 2 more. Coming back from injuries will be WRs Donovan Peoples-Jones, the team's leading receiver last year, as well as Tarik Black who was forced to miss the entire '18 season due to a foot injury. Harbaugh hopes these two will contribute to a scoring attack that finished second in the Big 10 last season in points per game.

So, get ready to sit on the couch with your favorite snacks and get ready for some

good Saturday afternoon football...

Go Big Blue!
