Have the Cubs turned the corner?

May 6, 2019

The Cubs started a weekend series versus the St Louis Cardinals, their Central Division rivals, this Friday. And if you are a Cubs fan, what a series it was! It definitely had a postseason feel to it!

The Cubs have begun to mesh and it shows in their record

Let me set the stage for this series. The Cubs started their season with a 3 and 7 record. They won their first game against Texas and then proceeded to lose six games in a row. Pitching was not good and the offense was struggling. It seemed they were sinking further and further into the division cellar. But, they started clawing their way up the standings literally one game at a time and found themselves entering a three game series with St Louis only 2 ½ games back. Could the Cubs even think of sweeping?

Game 1 saw Kyle Hendricks throw only 81 pitches that led to a 9 inning shutout (for those of you scoring at home that’s an average of 9 pitches per inning). The Cubs won 4 to 0 and advanced a game on the Cards.

Game 2 was more of an offensive game with Chicago backup catcher, Taylor Davis, hitting a grand slam (his first MLB homerun) in the 4th to tie the Cards and then Javy Baez hit a homer in the 8th inning to secure a 6 to 5 win for the NorthSiders. Cubbies gained another game on St Louis.

Game 3 was a back and forth battle but the Cubs scored often in the mid-innings and blew the game out with a grand slam by Kris Bryant that led to a 6 run 8th inning. Cubs won 13 to 5.

Cubs gained another game and now sit in first place with a ½ game lead over second place St Louis. So, have the Cubs finally turned the corner?
