Column: Baseball, a time to relax!

Last night I happen to come across some photos of a 2012 baseball road trip I took with my son and grandsons. It seems like so long ago that summers were spent on road trips and ball parks rather than on masks and lockdowns. As I settled in my recliner last night to watch the Cubs vs Pirates, I thought about what baseball means to society. In the midst of civil unrest, economic downturn, and anxiety and worry, baseball is a relief from it all. With a mind full of worry, a fan watches Javy Baez make a play from deep in the short stop position or Anthony Rizzo blast a home run over the right field fence or watch Jeremy Jeffress pick up a save after a heart pounding 9th inning. For a few hours baseball fans can shut down the noise of the World and revert back to a much easier time in America. A time of attending and enjoying a game at the ballpark with family and friends. A time of kids playing Little League or high school baseball. A time of following your favorite MLB team for 162 games! While I have watched a lot of baseball this short season it still doesn’t seem the same with no fans. I wonder how that will effect the experience during the playoffs? Can a Cubs fan imagine what Game 7 in the 2016 World Series would have been like with virtual fans! Even in Cleveland, the Cubs fed off the fan base. The Cubs have 24 more games to play this season. They have a 4-game lead in the NL Central Division. Let’s all use these last few games to enjoy life through baseball. Go Cubs!
